Usually if your car is running too rich or lean it can happen too.Īll e46 bmw's have have some oil issue sometime in their life and some can get issues when Cylinders 1 and 6 seem to egg shape a little more through out the years due to heat and well miles and well luck. The engine doesn't get a better chance to actually burn away or clean any deposits and carbon build up because it goes inside such a small area as well and before you say it yes, you aren't supposed to be getting oil on them or any other excessive issues but being an older e46 it is very possible your engine will have some issue you have yet to fix yet. The carbon can also get SO bad that it has a chance of actually welding itself to the center electrode and the other remaining 3 once you put some miles on them. Yet, the 1 electrode plugs for over 100 years have been fine. Not sure if it is a design flaw or just the idea in general as it never serves a purpose other than "more efficient spark and easier". The 4 electrodes are just too crammed for anything to be blown or burnt away. It is mainly due to this design of the 4 side electrodes causing easier build up during combustion and compression. They foul up, excessive carbon Fouling and oil up more than any other plug I've ever seen in my 16 years of mechanics. ![]() If you want to spend the money and do it, Go ahead but be weary that if you have a pretty old e46 or one with mileage hitting the 140s+ keep an eye on these when your car starts misfiring. Yes, they are right in theory but it should be FOR NEW Bmw's NOT for older ones. BMW does OEM recommend these plugs for our cars.
