Yes, I have volume leveling and TruVolume off on the TV and the surround sound. Still way better than it was, but turned the movie Only Yesterday on from HBO Max, and it’s muting everything again during quiet moments. Now my problem is PS4 to streaming services. So at least I fixed it with physical media. Changed the audio output in my PS4 settings to Bitstream and not PCM and through the controller options on blu-ray menus to Bitstream as well (Bitstream Dolby or DTS work perfectly fine). I thought I figured it out when I realized my PS4 was the issue. Vizio hasn’t been too helpful (although I did get a firmware update per their request on my Vizio sound bar but I’m convinced that was not the issue as my sound bar worked fine on my LG TV and audio never muted like this before purchasing the Vizio). During quiet moments of a movie, the sound completely mutes. I’ve had sound issues with my Vizio TV since I got it last year. That should bring the minimum and max decibels of the sound range closer together. Receivers usually have dynamic range settings, as well as a "night mode", which will narrow down the dynamic range. PS4's Blu-ray media player should have some sort of dynamic range compressor option, but usually receivers and even TVs have settings that will compress the dynamic range. If you are talking about the general "dialog too quiet, explosions too loud" thing, that's related to the dynamic range. In my setup, I noticed that the side channel sounds are kinda quiet in regular stereo mode, but simulated surround mixes the side channels better into the overall sound. If you suspect its the surround sound, see if your receiver has some sort of fake simulated surround feature. When it comes to your problem, are you sure its related to the surround sound, as usually the center speaker handles most if not all dialog, so you shouldn't be hearing much if anything. PS3 had a plethora of sound output settings you could toggle, but PS4 is very barebones in terms of choice. You probably can't, unless you use optical and set the console to output LPCM, because over HDMI PS4 will always push the best surround signal the receiving device can handle. Thank God I finally found this way of confirming my settings through the Uncharted Collection audio menu. But if you have selected either Bitstream (Dolby or DTS) in Audio Format (Priority), THEN THE GAME AUDIO MENU WILL PROPOSE 5.1 channels. If you select Linear PCM as I told you before, the game will only propose 2.1 channels. Note 2 : you can test the setting in the audio menu of Uncharted Collection. Note : selecting Linear PCM in Audio Format (Priority) WILL NOT GET YOU 5.1, BUT ONLY 2.1 even if sound is indeed coming through rear speakers in general. I personally chose Bitstream DTS as it is less compressed than Bitstream Dolby. Now the MOST IMPORTANT PART : in Audio Format (Priority), select either Bitstream (Dolby) or Bitstream (DTS). Select DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) for Primary Output Port (then I selected both Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1 and did not touch anything else there, then OK) In the PS4 menu, go to Settings - > Sound and Screen - > Audio Output Settings. Connect your PS4 to your home theatre with an optical cable So, here's what I did to finally get it to work properly : I am using an OPTICAL CABLE linked between my PS4 and my home theatre, not HDMI cables (my home theatre does not support both IN and OUT HDMI ports).
